day 6 – appreciation

Welcome to day six of 28 days of Self-Love.

Ready for another day of creativity? We are almost a week down. WooHoo! Let’s continue to cultivate the habit of Self-Love through creativity, breath, and gratitude.

appreciation.  |əˌprēSHēˈāSH(ə)n|
1.  the recognition and enjoyment of the good qualities of someone or something.
2.  a full understanding of a situation.

“I took a deep breath and listened to the old brag of my heart. I am, I am, I am.” —Sylvia Plath

  • Music Inspiration:  Yo-Yo Ma – Unaccompanied Cello Suite No. 1 in G Major, BWV 1007: Courante

  • Day 6 Exercise: I AM Statements

Grab that notebook.

Today we are going to focus on I AM statements. I AM statements are powerful. They are written in the present tense whether it is something you have achieved, or are yet to achieve but want to.

e.g. I AM brimming with energy and overflowing with joy. I AM the architect of my life; I build its foundations and choose its contents. I AM love and loving.

Strive to write a list of 15-20 I AM statements.

  • Day 6 Create: I AM Poem

Now the fun part and wordplay begin—  Look over your list with eyes of creativity and take keywords from your statements and try to relate them to something else, something descriptive, something tangible, tactile, poetic.

e.g. I AM brimming with energy and overflowing with joy.
become: I am bumblebee seeking nectar for my veins.

Now take these new snippets and feel free to incorporate some of the original I AM statements as you piece together a cohesive poem. You can form these as free verse or prose poetry.

Here is my creative work as a result of today’s exercise:

I AM Statements:

I AM the architect of my life; I build its foundations and choose its contents.
I AM a powerhouse.
I AM indestructible.
I AM worthy of love.
I AM a goddess.
I AM creative.
I AM successful.
I AM kindness.
I AM love and loving.
I AM happy.
I AM passionate.
I AM gentle.
I AM soft.
I AM prosperous.
I AM joy filled.

I AM Poem:
I am an architect with fossilized bones and shards of broken pasts, as I construct this new home of love, that lasts. I am a fisher of kings without rings in this land of gold. I am frost on the ground; a moment of regret. I am urgency. I am passion. I am a tent with a flap left open. The wind will billow unseen, and I am the last breath of a queen. Moments of mouths without words and I am all that is left. I am that. I am that and this; this planet and its last rotation around the sun. I am a tilted axis. I am one. I am tumbleweed and all the green of this earth. I am Earth and her daughter of birth.

Love and Ink,

I invite you to share your poems in the comment section below or link to a blog or personal website. Read and comment on others. Introduce yourselves. Get involved. I’m excited to see what all you lovely souls have created.

  1. ‪I am a hundred strokes of regrets‬
‪I am one thousand night tales‬
    ‪I am a fairy within the grains‬
    ‪I am heartsick I am quick‬
    ‪With a nevermind mindset‬
    ‪I am a bubble in the wind‬
    ‪Happy to be blown

  2. Here’s my poem:

    And here’s my I-AM:
    i am a warrior
    i am a knight
    i am a jerkoff
    i am authentic
i am learning to trust myself
    i am a professional
i am finding out about myself
i am finally able to see other people
    i am so lucky
i am having a wonderful family
i am having the best wife ever
i am blessed with nieces and a nephew
i am becoming a better friend
    i am loved
    i am loving
    i am discerning
i am finding balance in paradoxes
    LOVING these prompts!!

  3. Love that you are enjoying the prompts! You poems are deep and melodic.

However, you had to know I would say something here (i am a jerkoff) is not an I AM affirmation ;) (lol)

Trust me, I have journals filled with my flaws, faults, shortcomings, and darkest moments. But the sheer fact that you sandwiched that one in shows me you don’t want to believe it anymore either. You may have made some decisions in the past that were less than favorable, but you are not a jerkoff. You are the warrior and the knight of your own authenticity. You create you. You carve out your now, and the future. And to fully become you have to carve away what no longer serves you. (okay, just a little pep talk) Carry on.

    Much love and Ink.

  4. I was slowly releasing small puffs of hot air
over the edge of the universe
hoping to stare at nothing long enough to care

I was making wishes in yesterday’s dust today
    waiting for tomorrow’s tug
marching in an invisible human parade

I was between where I’ve been and what’s ahead
living fast all over the place
burdened with a terrified heart full of dread

I am now living a plan for true absolution
    using my own experiences
charting a course of clear restitution

  5. Soup

I am feeling faint, can’t think, need to eat. All my “I ams” served in a bowl, spiced up in my self-made stew of projects, people and poetry. Alter the ingredients. Instead of a cup of procrastination, I will use a heaping cup of new vision in appreciation of who I am. Drink it up.

  6. I am
that which life has given me.
    Breath, abundant like the wind.
Love, red, courses through my veins.

    I am
    where my footsteps take me.
Up high mountains or the raging sea
I am not afraid for the dear Lord leads me.

    I am
    what my hands create.
Gifts of ink, labor and of touch
I gladly share to those fated to meet.

    I am
    what my mind thinks.
A unique voice in a melody,
I sing songs to my own beat.

    I am
    what my mouth utters.
Not of dripping honey but of truth.
That of kindness and needed rebuke.

    I am
    who it is I am.
All that breath and blood allows.
Until the end of my days I am.

  7. It’s difficult to make statements with ‘I am’ unless you’re pretty sure about ithem. I came up with these three:
I am strong, like an oak that will shade and protect all that come under it.
I am unique, a colour only I can paint.
I am enough, I do not require the frills.

  8. Still running behind, but I hope to maybe catch up soon…anyway, a few snippets of I am…peaceful, tolerant, quiet & musical…

    Owl watched on as fingers
    of moonlight gently played
    amongst forest & leaves
    calmly waiting for the moment
to add a note of wisdom
    to the chattering trees

Words, love them! Have some? Leave them.
