  • Day 17 Exercise: Evaluate Your Relationships

Grab that notebook. Take a few minutes and jot down all of the people who play an essential role in your life. List all the reasons you are grateful for these people in your life.

Then make some notes about some of the less than ideal things some of these people may do that you find less than favorable. Be honest with yourself here. No one will ever have to see this except for you. Seriously, take some time and evaluate all the relationships in your life.

Are any of these people just complete energy drains, or abusive in any way, or neglectful, or do they take advantage of you?

I am not talking about a bad day or a disagreement with someone, but rather, honestly look at these relationships with eyes of compassion.  Ask yourself, is this relationship based on give-and-take? Is it serving my higher good? Is it toxic? Am I always giving to the point there is nothing left?

Begin to keep notes and track patterns. Check in with yourself periodically and decide if you might need to let go of any of these relationships because they are unhealthy or toxic. Sometimes in life (just like cleaning out a drawer, or a closet in yesterday’s exercise) we need to clean out relationships that no longer align with our highest good.

There is great strength in letting go. Knowing that you deserve more and are worthy of healthy relationships is vital. And sometimes you have to clear out all of the negative-energy vampires so you can pave the way for the light and friendships that will be beneficial for all.

You Are a Badass is a wonderful read filled with strength and humor for some added inspiration.

  • Day 17 Create: Free Verse

No rules here. This is why I adore Free Verse. Just let the day take your pen where it will. Write a poem about a relationship. Any relationship.

Don’t forget Shadow Poetry is a wonderful resource to familiarize yourself with different types of poetic form or refresh yourself on the different schemes.

Also, Poetry Foundation has a Glossary of Poetic Terms section you can search. A fantastic resource and site with daily poems for inspiration. and their Poem-A-Day is another wonderful site full of resources and a list of forms.

Here is my creative work as a result of today’s exercise:

Past relationships that were no longer for the betterment of me and my path.

Free Verse:  (This is one I wrote a while back. It’s one from my second poetry collection,  Love, Ink, & Sin.)

I want to undress
and press lips
to your unshaven face,
warm breasts to the rise
and fall of your chest

I want to undress
and lie beside you
press palms heavenward
and hips into this clay earth

I want to undress
and abandon the hows, and whys & whens
to the call of this untamed wind

I want to undress
and slip out of my skin
to begin again—

But I’m already naked,
standing here,
pooling blood
as I try to juggle the contents
of broken cups.

Love and Ink,

I invite you to share your poems in the comment section below or link to a blog or personal website. Read and comment on others. Introduce yourselves. Get involved. I’m excited to see what all you lovely souls have created.

You rock! See you back here tomorrow with another day of Self-Love.

(Hint, maybe Google a place to take a local yoga class for tomorrow.)

  1. Angry words masking pain and fear
A world of lies you hide behind
    To make cruelty justified
    Filled with delusions of grandeur
Playing sick games each passing year
    Perception of reality
    Deceiving your stability
    You cannot hurt me anymore
    Carry on your sadistic war
It is all about you, not me

  2. Grace, that is so hot. Im so afraid to let the wild out.

Funny how you can both grow up
In the same house, and have no
    Connection deeper than a name
Those men didn’t even know I had a brother
    His absence is a barrier,
    My non-acceptance is a barrier
    My absence is a barrier
Both adopted, both craving a brother
    But unable to explain
We never clasped, so can’t let go
I pray someday, again we’ll share a cup

Words, love them! Have some? Leave them.
